“The blind point of the human eye is not the physical point where the nerves get connected with the eye retina, but our unconscious guess that the world is as we see it”
Niger Barlow.
The beliefs are personal statements we consider to be true. They are, in many cases, unconscious: they affect the perceptions we have of ourselves, of the others and of the things around us. We often think they are universally true and we do not realise they are something exclusively personal. What we are living and how we are living it depends more on the elaboration of our mind map than on the “territory” itself: therefore, the map is not the territory. They come from what has been told us (by our parents, teachers…) or from something very strong that has happened to us, which has remained recorded in our subconscious.
When the belief is installed in us in a firm manner, our mind models our health, creativity, behaviours, our way to relate with the others… basing on it. It is widely known that if someone really believes he/she can do something, he/she will do it and if he/she believes it is impossible, no effort will convince him/her to do it.
The beliefs, on the other hand, are usually global (life is hard, people are kind…) or rules of behaviour (if I have fixed incomes, I will have security…)
The beliefs, therefore, can also be encouraging or discouraging.
It is important to know our beliefs. If you think life is hard, it is going to be hard. Anything we assume as a part of our identity will start to have important impact on us.
What can we do to change the beliefs that harm us?
Peace is got when we are able to join our mind with what we say and what we do. Verbalisation is giving strength to our thoughts, making the idea become sound. The word is tremendously powerful, the verb becomes an action.
Pay attention to the way you speak, to how you communicate with the others and to your internal dialogues. An “I am not going to be able”, “it will be complicated”, “I will try it, but…” is going to become real.
To boost serendipity it is necessary to get free from certain ways of thinking. For example, blaming the society, the others, the destiny…
What I think, what I say and what I do are the seed of what I am going to harvest. From the moment that I am able to listen when I speak and realise that I am realising how I am speaking, I can change my way of speaking and get conscious of what I am sending to the world.
